Stories of the familiar, or at least recognisable, have themes and settings that slowly degrade into something more terrifying. Where banal things slowly morph and disfigure into something more imposing. One of my favourites is a story with building menace and rich mystery. Whether the shock of a jump scare, the dramatic reveal of the menacing force or the desperate hopelessness of facing an overpowered entity are some of the classic tropes. Great horror can hit home in a multitude of ways. It’s a very difficult emotion to create, but to also do it in such an accomplished way is rather staggering. Adam delivers an experience that for me, carried a powerful, tangible sinister menace. An Antarctic exploration horror story where even penguins are unnerving? Well, Adam Fyda has written and drawn a very special graphic novel based on H.P Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness.Īdam Fydas The Mountains of Madness is a fantastic graphic novel.
